Blackbody

from Here To Now by Timm Biery

about

A blackbody allows all incident radiation to pass into it (no reflected energy) and internally absorbs all the incident radiation (no energy transmitted through the body). This is true for radiation of all wavelengths and for all angles of incidence. Hence the blackbody is a perfect absorber for all incident radiation.

A blackbody in thermal equilibrium has two notable properties:
1) It is an ideal emitter: at every frequency, it emits as much energy as or more energy than any other body at the same temperature.
2) It is a diffuse emitter: the energy is radiated isotropically, independent of direction.

That pretty much describes what I'm trying to accomplish with the drumming in this piece.

This piece was built from the drums up. Often when I solo, I hear ambient textures, lines, noises, etc., in my head and play along to them. I doubt I'm unique in that regard. Interesting things can happen, however, when you begin to try to realize the other parts you heard in a moment of spontaneous composition.

It's difficult to achieve a sense of improvisation when you're the only one playing. My way around this is to play each part only once and to record each part on separate days without listening to the piece before the day's tracking begins. I think it worked pretty well in this case.
